BEST CHILLWAVE - WEEK 41 PART 1 2014

10/10/14

Come, hipsters, for it's your favorite month of all. October! The leaves are turning crunchy, the fog is growing dense and the oversized sweaters are coming out in full force, at least according to my Tumblr feed. And what better way to see in autumn than with a fresh dose of indie chill songs? That, and a hot Pumpkin Spice Latte, of course! Jokes aside, the fall is by far my favorite season as a music fan. There really is no greater pleasure than cozying up by the fire at night with your boyfriend or girlfriend and listening to your record collection. Not that I have a fire, or a boyfriend for the matter. Brb, going to cry in my Starbucks to go.

MT EDEN – AT NIGHT

Mt. Eden recently said on their Twitter page they “can't decide what genre” this song is. To which I say to the Brooklyn duo, how about create a new music genre entirely? Something like “the prettiest fucking shit in the universe” genre? I guess I can settle with “cinematic,” though. I love this comment left by the SoundCloud user, agarcia8045: “Makes the world move slowely. Makes you think of your life. Makes u picture ur future.”

whoa

HUNDRED WATERS – DOWN FROM THE RAFTERS (THE FIELD REMIX)

Axel Willner is a fucking genius! Dude has extracted the tiniest sample from the original “Down from the Rafters” and turned it into this big, beautiful and slow-burning seven minute epic. A most perfect contrast to Huxley's banging and beefed up dancefloor reinterpretation. Now bring on the Tim Hecker remix and all balance shall be restored in the world.

HAYDEN CALNIN – I CORRUPT

I first introduced you to “I Corrupt” in March, but Hayden Calnin has since re-released it as a single from his Oh Hunter EP. Any excuse for me to listen to the Melbourne artist's voice again. That shit could move mountains! Bon Iver approves.

TOM MISCH – ON MY MIND

Tom Misch fucking excites me! The mad prolific 19-year-old surpasses himself with almost every release. “On my Mind” is arguably the London producer's most experimental effort to date. Think James Blake singing an old-school jazz standard. That said, a bounce like this is begging for some young Kendrick or Chance type to rap over it.

JARREAU VANDAL (FEAT. ASHLEY RÖTTJERS) – TWO WEEKS (FKA TWIGS COVER)

FKA twigs doesn't have the strongest voice, but she does have incredible control. Not many people can pull that off, but the 18-year-old Arnhem chanteuse, Ashley Röttjers, gives it her best shot here. I'd still rather be listening to the original over Jarreau Vandal, though. Just saying.

DIVERSA – PLEASE DON'T HURT YOURSELF

brace yourselves the feels are coming

KIZMET – DAYDREAMER

“An auditory taste of another place, wherever it is your mind takes you while listening.” This is Kizmet describing his Pacific State EP, a five song magnum opus of understated electronic genius. Here the EP's centrepiece and arguable highlight, “Daydreamer,” makes like a mystical incantation unfurling before the eyes, with various samples and synths coming and going again in the vein of the very phenomena the song is named after. In fact, I had to pinch myself on Kizmet's BandCamp page, where the enigmatic Nambour producer is currently giving the EP away for free. Yes, free.

GALLANT – MANHATTAN (REAL SLOW REMIX)

Real Slow. Real fucking Slow indeed! If this doesn't make you want to get naked, then, erm. Then you must be naked already! Jokes aside, Real Slow locks that chill trap shit down on this remix of Gallant's “Manhattan.” To quote Randy Newman: “You can leave your hi-hat on.”

AUSTIN JOHNSON (FEAT. MOTHICA) – HELPLESS

According to the Brooklyn native, Austin Johnson, he makes “music your cat can fall asleep to.” Never has a SoundCloud biography so readily convinced me to listen to an artist. It's true, too! Colonel Snazzypants definitely had no problem falling asleep beside me to this spellbinding song featuring fellow Brooklynite, Mothica. What? For more musical equivalent of cat nip, grab a free download of Johnson's Hero EP here.

REKALL – YAGYA IN 90 MINUTES

90 minutes of non-stop music by one of my favorite producers of all time, Yagya. 90 minutes of sheer and unadulterated Icelandic dub-techno bliss. 90 minutes for you to escape from all of the ISIS, Ebola and other crap that's going on in the world atm. 90 minutes for you to simply be. For the full tracklisting, head over to Rekall's SoundCloud page.

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
