Best Indie Songs (Week 17) - 10 Favs!

by Jess Grant | 4/22/13

Well, last week was all kinds of lame! We are sending our love to Boston and beyond! Don't let the bastards (the fertilizers, or the earthquakes!) bring you down, everybody! Keep on keeping on, starting with the best indie songs of the week! Did we forget something?! Oh, now, that's embarrassing! Tell us in the comments, down below!

-

Empire of the Sun “Alive”

Don't lose your shit or anything but... Empire of the Sun are totally fucking back! “Alive” is the first single to be lifted from Ice on the Dune, which is released in June. Y'all enjoying this as much as I am? Let's talk!

Surfer Blood “Demon Dance”

Woah. Are we just going to forget that John Paul Pitts assaulted his girlfriend last year?! Maybe that is why he dressed up as a cop in the new video for “Demon Dance.” Moving along... This doesn't touch “Swim.” Pythons better step up its game.

twenty | one | pilots  “Car Radio”

Oh shit. Somebody stole Tyler Joseph's “Car Radio” and the twenty | one | pilot is pissed off! So pissed off, he's done a Britney Spears, circa 2007. But don't worry! He “Harlem Shakes” it off at 2.59. “Car Radio” is lifted from Vessel, out now on Fueled by Ramen!

Savages “Shut Up”

Shut Up” and listen to the all-female punk band, Savages! Does anybody else think that these girls could grow to be on a level with Siouxsie, Ari, and Poly? Share your thoughts, down below, and grab the debut album, Silence Yourself, next month on Matador!

London Grammar “Wasting My Young Years”

Florence Welch had better watch her back! Hannah Reid of London Grammar means business. The British trio are back with a new single, “Wasting My Young Years.” Check out the promotional video, above, then catch a live performance, over at The Guardian!

Foals “Inhaler (Live)”

Yannis Philippakis fucks up his guitar line around 1.20. But cut him some slack! I could never sing that track, play that lick, and rock that beard - at the same time! Shout out to Michael Cera on the sticks.

Low “Just Make It Stop”

Just Make It Stop.” Well, I could say the same about this track... Yikes, I'm only joking! Hey, at least Mimi Parker remembered to wax her upper lip the day before the video shoot. That could have been so much awkward!

Tobacco “Lipstick Destroyer”

Get Lucky” is the strawberry jam! But I, the mortal equivalent of the hipster kitty meme, will be eschewing Random Access Memories in favor of Tobacco, the, I quote, “depraved, fucked up sibling to Daft Punk's big city, good schoolin' sounds.”

DIIV “Doused”

There is no boobs, and there is no Sky Ferreira, in the video for “Doused.” But there is a shit-load of perspiring bros! What is Zachary Cole Smith running from? “Drunk corporate goons,” perhaps? Look, we know this is eight months old... But how great is Oshin?

The Standells “Dirty Water”

Closing down this week's Best of Indie with one of the greatest songs, about one of the greatest cities! “Dirty Water,” which is lifted from The Standells' second album of the same name, was a Top 10 hit in 1965. This one's for you, Boston!
