BEST NEW SONGS: RUELLE - DEEP END

9/29/15

Definition of RUELLE. 1. archaic : the space between a bed and the wall. 2. : a morning reception held in their bedrooms by fashionable French ladies of the 17th and 18th centuries.

I’m not sure which definition of Ruelle Maggie Eckford is going for with her electropop outfit, or if she’s trying to find a whole new definition. Perhaps it’s a combination of the two, since her latest single “Deep End” feels like the sort of thing fashionable people would dance to in the space between their bed and the wall.

This song is a dark and brooding anthem, one that sets the tone from the very first notes you here. The vague lyrics hinted at something lurking beneath the surface, and a great deal of emotional resonance seems to be taking place. Eckford’s vocals rise over the piano and electronic backdrop, carrying the song.

At first listen I could have sworn this was Jasmine Thompson. Can’t stop listening to this.

We’ll leave you with the lyrics for “Deep End”:

where can i go when the shadows are calling, shadows are calling me?
what can i do when it's pulling me under, pulling me underneath?

it's getting close
i lose control
it's taking over
i'm slipping, into the deep end
i'm in over my head, i can't catch my breath
i'm slipping, into the deep end
feel the current within,
i can't help but give in

like blood in my veins
darkness is sinking, darkness is sinking in
commanding my soul
i am under the surface where the blackness burnes beneath

it's getting close
i lose control
it's taking over
it's getting close
i lose control
it's taking over
i'm slipping, into the deep end
i'm in over my head, i can't catch my breath
i'm slipping, into the deep end
feel the current within
i can't help but give in
i'm lost in the deep end
i'm lost in the deep end
i'm lost in the deep end
i'm lost in the deep end

it's getting close
i lose control
it's taking over
it's getting close
i lose control
it's taking over
i'm slipping, into the deep end
i'm in over my head and i can't catch my breath
i'm slipping, into the deep end
i feel the current within
i can't help but give in
i'm lost in the deep end
i'm lost in the deep end
i'm lost in the deep end
i'm lost in the deep end
