CHILL OUT MUSIC - WEEK 46 PART 1 2014

11/14/14

Assuming Kim Kardashian's latest photo shoot is yet to break your internet, then welcome to BitCandy. As far as I'm concerned, Kim can take that champagne bottle of hers and shove it where the sun don't shine, as I've got more important things to be doing around here. Like filtering through the blogosphere for this week's top chillwave. Featuring bands, artists and producers including Hundred Waters, Chromatics and Brandyn Burnette, this shit is more glistening than any well-oiled ass crack I'm ever going to see. To the fucking music!

HUNDRED WATERS – OUT ALEE

Hundred Waters have a tendency to make me feel as if I'm submerged deep under the ocean, surrounded by a warm, protective and womb-like vessel of water, and this video for “Out Alee” from the director, Michael Langan, captures that essence perfectly. Nicole Miglis is a goddess!

STARWALKER – BLUE HAWAII

From the depths of the ocean, up into orbit with the super chill Starwalker, the collaborative project of electro-pop icons, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Bardi Johannsson. Forget about your ass going numb watching Interstellar, this video from the director, Ragnar Bragason, has all the space dust you need.

CHROMATICS – AT YOUR DOOR (EIGHT-TRACK VERSION)

Kill for Love was my favorite record of 2012. Chromatics haven't resurfaced since then, however, so when Johnny Jewel uploaded an eight-track version of “At Your Door” to SoundCloud recently, it's safe to say I lost my shit. Check out the stripped-back, albeit still fucking groovy, demo above.

BEACON – L1

Beacon abandon their out-of-body PBR&B roots in favor of more cerebral electro-pop sound on “L1,” the latest single to be taken from the Brooklyn duo's upcoming EP of the same name. Think Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, only if Thom Yorke had a more exciting sex life.

BRANDYN BURNETTE – PROMISED LAND

I haven't cried like this since toy story 3

DNKL – WARM DARK NIGHT

Swedish goodness here from DNKL! On “Warm Dark Night,” the latest single to be taken from their upcoming EP, Wolfhour, the Gothenburg trio sound as ethereal, melancholic, and frankly, Nordic as they first did this time last year when they unleashed their breakthrough song, “Hunt.”

ÉLAH – SAY

I want Élah to sing me to sleep every night. Homegirl has one of the most soothing voices I've ever heard. Said voice is able to take center-stage on her debut single, “Say,” as the Toronto beat-maker, Russell Chuck Morgan, has intentionally kept his production to a minimum. Jessie Ware approves!

NZWT – ANGLER

Since The Weeknd is too busy boning Ariana Grande these days, I need some new PBR&B. Enter NZWT! The Melbourne artist has been drip-feeding me sensual sounds for seven months now, but none have hit my spot like “Angler.” Rumor has it an EP is on the way soon, so prepare the ovaries.

LA PETITE ROUGE – DANGER IS MY ONLY LOVER

She may go by a French name, but La Petite Rouge hails from Germany. That said, it doesn't matter where this 18-year-old electro-folk artist is located. What matters is her music, and based on the few demos on SoundCloud, it happens to be the kind that transcends the space-time continuum anyway.

NICK HILL – KNOW THIS

I wasn't expecting that Chet Faker voice to come out the Sydney artist, Nick Hill. With his blonde hair and beautiful face, dude looks like he should be making sun-drenched beach-pop, not bourbon-soaked electro-folk. His debut single, “Know This,” has definitely earned him a follow from me.

I'm afraid that's all I've got for this week's top chillwave. I'm back next Friday for more, but in the meantime, I've got some belfies to be taking.

I'm just kidding

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
