INDIE POP MUSIC - WEEK 36 PART 1 2014

9/3/14

It’s not always easy figuring out what kind of music to listen to each week. So we’re going to make it simple for you. If you’re going to pick up a couple of indie pop songs, here are a handful of tracks that are worth your time including Strange Talk, Lincoln Jesser, Monsieur Adi and others. And since there is absolutely no way of covering all of our favorites — we’re splitting PopSmut up into two sections. Wahoo. More for you. So let’s get started with the listening shall we, and leave your suggestions in the comments below.

STRANGE TALK - YOUNG HEARTS

For a track that is clearly a stunner, I am surprised it only has 100K plays on YouTube. Strange Talk’s single, "Young Hearts," oozes with warm feel good vibes and lyrics that are relatable with everyone. As for the video, well...I guess the direction of the video is open to interpretation.

GRIMES - GO

I just love everything about Grimes. And really, what’s not to love? Her vocals really lend themselves to this style of experimental pop. And the video is right up her alley, quirkie to the max.

JUICY J - LOW

Bahaha, Juicy J’s intro is ridonculous. If his lyrics had more than one syllable in them, I would have perhaps given this track a second spin. Not even Nicki whom I love and adore could have saved Low from feeling like a corny SNL skit.

RUSTIE - ATTAK FT. DANNY BROWN

Danny Brown may have one of the most annoying voices in the industry, but that aside, this track is pretty killer. And Rustie...oh dayuum.

LINCOLN JESSER - UNTOLD

I won’t deny it, new Lincoln Jesser tracks make me touch myself in ways that society may not think of as appropriate. If you love carefree vibes and sun-kissed rhythms, then this right here is for your indulgence.

JOHN LEGEND - YOU AND I (R3HAB REMIX)

If you’re looking for a producer to follow on Soundcloud, R3HAB’s your guy. Guaranteed no two tracks will be the same. And as for the remix above, enjoy it with that special someone or something and hump responsibly.

ELLIE GOULDING X DAFT PUNK x MONSIEUR ADI - NO GUNS AND HORSES, JUST MAKE

Always pleasant, never loud. A glorious blend by producer Monsieur Adi. The minimalistic approach makes it easy to listen to. Definitely a remix you’ll want to have on replay.

SAY LOU LOU - INSTANT CRUSH

Oh my gawd. Just when I thought I couldn’t love these girls any more! Continuing on with their disco dance music fling, Say Lou Lou takes on Daft Punk’s "Instant Crush" and the result is a gorgeous ethereal track.

LOOK AT WRIST (URBINDEX REMIX) FATHER, ILOVE MAKONNEN, KEY!

Producer Urbindex comes into play adding more heat to an already potent track. Listen to the above while I investigate more about what he is and what he does.

KATE BUSH - RUNNING UP THAT HILL (AVEC SANS COVER)

It’s tracks like these that make my job worthwhile. I’m sure Kate Bush approves of this eclectic electro remix.

Looks like we’ve come to an end. I’ll see you all next week, but until then make sure your treat Erin Cider well and show her some love. She’ll be helping me out with part two of this series.

About Beca Arredondo

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
