NEW ARTIST FINDS: SON LUX

3/5/14

When New Yorker Ryan Lott isn’t busy composing music for commercials and movies (like Looper!), or making music with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti in S / S / S, he is creating dazzling music under the name Son Lux. The classically trained composer has already made an impact with his 2008 debut, At War with Walls & Mazes, which got him the title of “best new artist” on NPR’s All Songs Considered. The 34 year old is currently promoting his latest album, Lanterns, which is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings and if you know what’s good for you, you will check it out immediately (well, after reading this post of course!).

“Easy” has been getting a lot of attention ever since everyone’s favorite twitchy mythical creature, Lorde, tweeted about it and covered the song at one of her shows. But the song can easily stand on its own - it demands your full attention right from the start, and slowly builds into a solid four minutes of guitar and saxophones that create a truly original and memorable track.

“Lost Is To Trying” is a more fun and upbeat track, that sounds as if it was created solely to serve as the soundtrack to jumping into a rocket ship and journeying into outer space (which is totally my kind of music!). Parts of the song are reminiscent of older M83 tracks, but with awesomely spastic drums, more saxophones, and piccolos galore. There’s so much great stuff going on that you will be finding yourself instantly hitting replay just to make sure you didn’t miss anything. It’s truly a party for your ears.

To learn more about Son Lux and listen to more of his mind blowing stuff, check out his official page and show him some love. And last but not least, thanks to Curator, Hankyh, for sharing this amazing new artist with us!
