TOP CHILL OUT MUSIC - WEEK 16 2014

4/11/14

This is it, you guys. Coachella is finally here. I can smell the hipster blood, sweat and tears all the way from Los Angeles. No doubt about it, you're going to return on Monday with banging hangovers, but don't sweat it. A couple of Vicodin and a dose of top chill out music should get you back on the straight and narrow in no time. Big up to the Curators who helped out with this week's picks by SZA, The Acid, Chrome Sparks and many more. If you'd like to be a Curator, sign up here.

SZA (FEAT. KENDRICK LAMAR) – BABYLON

Hipsters, this is everything to me. Kendrick Lamar has dropped a verse over SZA's already flawless “Babylon,” and it's a match made in heaven. Mad props to Solana Rowe for putting the dawgette back into Top Dawg Entertainment on her newest record.

THE ACID – CREEPER (LIVE)

Remember that Thom Yorke type vocal shit meets that Trent Reznor type musical shit meets some other type something shit that probably doesn't even exist yet that I brought you a couple of weeks ago? Yeah, apparently it sounds even more sexy in person.

MINNI LOVELLE – DON'T YOU (FORGET ABOUT ME) (SIMPLE MINDS COVER) – CURATOR DUFFSTER

Not even embarrassed to admit that “Don't You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds is one of my favorite songs of all time. Not even embarrassed. Big up to Duffster for turning me on to a cover that isn't completely blasphemous. Not even embarrassed.

CHROME SPARKS – GODDESS

Right in the feels, Chrome Sparks. Right in the motherfucking feels. Future bass at its most genuine and emotional. Make sure you catch Jeremy Malvin at Coachella, as the dude sounds even more incredible in the flesh. Right in the motherfucking feels.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD – HONEST

Not since the halcyon days of Chad Kroeger's “Hero” has a song from the Spiderman film franchise moved me so much. Jokes aside, many people are going to be introduced to The Neighbourhood through this. It's hardly as credential as Divergent, though.

KELELA – THE HIGH

Mmm. This tastes so fucking good. Turn my cherry out, Kelela. If Solange is the hipster counterpart to Beyonce, then Kelela is the hipster counterpart to Solange. Not to mention, Solange is too busy making cameos in Beyonce videos to even create music.

DUCK HOUSE – BLUE HOUR

Discowave, can we make this a thing? As it's definitely a thing. Check out British producer Duck House's SoundCloud page and you'd agree it's definitely a thing. “Blue Hour” is my favorite song on said SoundCloud page. Duck House, purveyor of vibes.

SOLOMON GREY – GLAS/GREEN – CURATOR BECA

Solomon Grey have been consistently awesome ever since “Firechild.” On their newest record, they take us on a trip down the Irish coast. No seriously, they genuinely take us on a trip down the Irish coast. Crashing Irish waves? My new favorite instrument.

AQUILO – IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS

Aquilo, how long has it been? Over a year? It was fun, but I thought I was never going to hear from you again. How wrong I was, as this April you return with not one, not two, but four new songs. Dig on my favorite of the quartet. It was worth the wait.

FRANKIE ROSE – PAIR OF WINGS (BABA STILTZ REMIX)

Had I started with this seven minute reinterpretation of Frankie Rose's “Pair of Wings” as I first intended, I doubt you'd have made it through the remainder of the roundup. By concluding with it instead, it's okay if it sends you into a deep sleep. Aah.

That's it for this week's top chill out music, you guys. If you hipsters dug on this, then maybe we can hang out all over again on Friday, same time and place? Don't forget, if you'd like to contribute to any of our weekly roundups, sign up to be a Curator.

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
