TOP ELECTRO HOUSE - WEEK 33 2014

8/13/14

Soooo… I just got back from my final festival of my road trip festival run. Five festivals…2 months. It ended at Shambhala in B.C. and holy shit! I know I've been preaching the hippie-raver mantra since you all met me in January but this place is THE hippie rave. I can't even explain the beauty up there in those Canadian woods. I'm back and I'm a changed man. Enough about me. How have YOU been this summer? I'm back to chill with y'all. Off tour and BACK in LA. That means that next week posts will return to Mondays and you guys will have some great shit to do on the worst day of the week.

Mondays suck. Songs Rule. Let's Party.

SOPHIE - HARD

Sophie is rad as fuck and we're gonna hype every single song he comes out with. Sorry, not sorry. Bleeps and Bloops and Klangs and Swoops and Whistles for days.

ABOVE & BEYOND - BLUE SKY ACTION (GRUM REMIX)

When I came into this scene a couple of years back, Grum was happening in a pretty serious way. He had funky disco vibes that were catching everybody's ears. Then he went away for a spell and is starting to stick his head back into the game. This is some straight up A&B trance from Grum, which is a complete change from the Grum I remember. But fuck it, artists can innovate can't they? I still like this as much as old Grum and that's all that matters.

DYRO - WOLV

I avoided this song for a couple of weeks 'cause the last time I checked in on Dyro, he was making the most generic big room in the game. This is big and it's hard and it hits. It's the first release on Dyro's label, WOLV, and he's preaching about "standing apart from the limitations and restrictions that many artists face…in this generation of music." The hook rips like a metal solo and I'm on board if this is what Dyro is hyping to his people.

F.O.O.L. - KEEP ON ROCKING

Speaking of labels releasing all sorts of different shit, ain't no one doing that as well as Monstercat. They'll release anything -- as long as it's good. Not pigeonholed to one certain type of genre. This track from F.O.O.L. or Fuck Our Ordinary Lives is an awesome Funky Electro track that's got a filthy bass, but like a nice kind of filthy. The kind of filthy you can take home to mom.

OLIVER HELDENS - KOALA

Great, I'll gladly take Gecko 2.0 from Oliver Heldens. Oliver, for as young as he is, has a SUPER defined bass sound. I really appreciate artists like him and Tchami that are using this one amazing synth for their tracks and truly make their songs stand out as their songs. Also, it helps that he has great taste and music and is also great at mixing that music. Now let's just hear the vocal remix, huh?

PLANET OF SOUND - NIGHTDRIVE

It's so rare to hear something new and not be able to pigeon-hole it into some sort of genre or three genres mixed together. This is just some beautiful electronic music. Pretty synths, ryhrhythmic drums minimalistic vocal samples. This is what the shit used to be like before the big EDM boom. Thanks for making me listen to this, Pete Tong, you always have such dynamite taste.

TUFF WHEELZ - THE MAKERS

Some classic sounds here from Tuff Wheelz. A tribute to the O.G. makers of this music that we all love and take for granted. It's just simple house music. But since when has there been anything wrong with that?

DJ DAN & WHITENOIZE - ENGINE NO. 9

Speaking of classic sounds -- here DJ Dan harkens back to the early SoCal warehouse rave sounds. Pasquale Rotella started booking DJ Dan on all of his lineups recently to pay credit to one of the dudes who was so important in his early raving days. Bassnectar dropped this track at Shambhala because he and DJ Dan were on with the same set time and he wanted to pay his respect.

JOHNTYPE - DAFT PUNK, SKRILLEX, ZEDD, MICHAEL JACKSON, GHOSTBUSTERS (ELECTRO DISCO MASHUP)

That's a lot of songs in one song. Hopefully this dude will turn into the next Girl Talk and/or Madeon. I don't particularly subscribe to the mash-up thing but it's far more impressive when it's 12 songs being worked into one. Ain't got no beef with talent.

FLYING LOTUS - YOU'RE DEAD ALBUM TEASER

New Flying Lotus music! Two whole minutes of new music from the master of weird experimental electronic hip-hop jazz music. YAY! I can't wait till October when this album comes out. I'm sure I'll be writing about all these songs individually then, cause it all sounds so promising rn.!!!!

Thanks for reading all the song blurbs. See u next weeK.

- KURT

About Kurt Kroeber

From deep within the murky depths of the Los Angeles River emerged a creature: 50% raver, 50% comedian, 10% Robotcop. Kurt Kroeber doesn’t own a dog, operates Soundbleed (the world’s only dance party comedy talk show rave), and is down to party with you. Come up some time and say “Hey dude!” But definitely make sure to casually drop the secret Illuminati password.
