TOP INDIE SONGS – WEEK 18

4/27/15

HAPPY MONDAY! That's right, we believe the words “happy” and “Monday” can co-exist in the same sentence here at BitCandy, because Monday is the day when we bring you the top indie songs of the week! 10 COOL, AWESOME, RAD tunes that make your ears and brain and genitals go “mmm yes.” All together now! “Mmm yes.” Featuring new shit from Arca, Father John Misty, Made in Heights and more, I'm willing to bet this is some of the best music you've ever never heard! So I have one question for you, internette. IS UR BODY READY?!

NEVER YOUNG – LIKE A VERSION

FUCK YEAH, Never Young! Rain that lo-fi, noise rock, post-hardcore shit down on me, my saviors! Don't even care if I'm going to have nightmares tonight about creepy hands and burning mannequins and pale guys in balaclavas, I'M HITTING REPLAY!

THE MOWGLI'S – I'M GOOD

Shiny happy people The Mowgli's are back and spreading more vibes with “I'm Good,” the summer jam to end all summer jams. Feeling “basic bitch in a flower crown dancing at a beach party” af rn.

ARCA – SAD BITCH

Arca and his long-time collaborator, director Jesse Kanda, do it again. Mind-fucking, soul-destroying, life-affirming ART right here. I'm serious, this shit and every other video that has accompanied Xen should be exhibited in the MoMA and studied for years and years to come. Just don't watch if you suffer from trypophobia.

FATHER JOHN MISTY – I LOVED YOU, HONEYBEE

Record Store Day, for the most part, totally fucking sucks. There were SOME releases worth waking up at 5am and fighting the throng of hipster and eBay scalpers over this year, however. Releases like this heart-shaped vinyl from master troll Father John Misty, featuring “I Loved You, Honeybee,” an acoustic version of the title track of his second album, I Love You, Honeybear. #need

MARIKA HACKMAN – OPHELIA

Marika Hackman's debut album, We Slept at Last, is a thing of dark and intriguing beauty. It's music to get lost in, as depicted in this video for the record's centrepiece “Ophelia,” which finds the London songstress stranded in the middle of the Los Angeles desert. Dat hair tho.

ALEX NIGGEMANN – SORROW

Nobody does beautiful, emotional and complex techno like the Germans. Leading the way is Berlin-based producer Alex Niggemann, whose dark and dexterous arpeggios are brought to life in this stunningly choreographed video for “Sorrow.”

LOWLY – FIRE

There's something otherworldly about Lowly's music. Perhaps the so-called “Danish” band have descended from a mystical planet light-years away in order to spread their sonic magic over us petty humans? As far as I'm concerned, this bedazzling video for “Fire” featuring a bunch of colorful, rhinestone-addled street performers taking off in a spaceship only gives credence to said conspiracy theory.

HOWLING – STOLE THE NIGHT (ÂME REMIX)

No biggie, just Karlsruhe duo Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann of Âme stepping up to do a SEVEN FUCKING MINUTE remix of “Stole the Night” by Frank's side-project with Ry X, Howling. I repeat, nobody does beautiful, emotional and complex techno like the Germans.

MADE IN HEIGHTS – FORGIVENESS

Once again, Made in Heights prove themselves to be the most innovative, experimental and ultra-catchy pop band this side of Mississippi on “Forgiveness,” the Los Angeles duo's first song of 2015. Bringing together the ever-winning formula of Kelsey Bulkin's crystalline vocals and Sabzi's erratic production, it's guaranteed to leave you hyped for their as-yet-untitled second album, due out in May.

PANKHABILLI – WATER ON MARS

So I think I just discovered the PJ Harvey of 2015. “Water on Mars” may be the only song (or demo, to be specific) on Pankhabilli's SoundCloud, but the dark and groovy tune already has me sold on (or in this case, subscribed to) the enigmatic chanteuse. It's not everyday you get to hear a grand piano combined with a four-to-the-floor beat, but something tells me this chick is far from everyday.

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
