To most, the suburbs offer nothing more than safety and quiet for the mostly white, conservative population that inhabits it. For the kids growing up there, life is often monotonous and stale, leaving some to find entertainment through illegal, sometimes dangerous means. It seems to me however, as a product of the suburbs myself, that the 'burbs are also home to some of the most creative and unique minds on the planet, often producing art that any Silver Lake hipster with a pair of black jeans and Rachel Maddow glasses would be proud to call their own. One of these shimmers of light, hailing from the suburbs of Cary, NC is a band simply known as Oulipo.
The brain child of college junior and front man Ryan Trauley, Oulipo blends elements of neo-psychedelic sound, multi-track instrumental samples and ambient vocal stylings, drawing comparisons to the likes of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend. The band's first release, an EP entitled "That Is What I Said (And I Dove Into the Water)" on indie label DiggUp Tapes, has attracted a decent following amongst southern Indie rock circles, even propelling the band to a spot at last year's Hopscotch Music Festival. Although the EP is extremely enjoyable as something you pop in on the way to work, from my experiences, the EP truly shines as a soundtrack for "getting high." As of February 12th, I have listened to Oulipo under the influence of ecstasy, marijuana and acid and I'm proud to report that each experience is a smile inducing, thought provoking safari ride.
At the moment, Trauley and the gang are back at their respective universities but say they're currently working on a new project of EP or full length proportion. The band also says they plan on touring sometime this summer. Until I can get my hands on some new Oulipo material, my bong, packet of glow sticks and kaleidoscope will be at the ready. To download the band's EP (pick your price style for you dirty, free-loading Santa Cruz hipsters), head over to http://oulipo.bandcamp.com/ and follow the band on twitter or on the book of face.
