TOP CHILLWAVE SONGS - WEEK 29 2014

7/18/14

Hi guys! How's your week going?! Not as bad as mine I hope :(. The only thing that's getting me through it is Weird Al :). Weird Al and a side-ordering of top chillwave songs. It's a musical recipe that I recommend to all of you. And while I'm offering recommendations, Weird Al should DEFINITELY consider releasing an album of chillwave parodies only. I'm sure it'd open up his music to a whole new demographic of bros. Call it Al-Wave. I'd vibe on that shit for the rest of my fucking life and 100% never be unhappy again. Here are 10 suggestions for Al-Wave, as hand-picked from the blogosphere by yours truly...

PRELOW – MISTAKES LIKE THIS

“And my dick takes over/And I'm thinking about your lips/But we're too damn sober/For mistakes like this.” How's that for a chorus?! As a feminist, I'm obvs somewhat conflicted by this song from Prelow, but if the blow job in question is mutually consented to, then LET'S PARTY. There's really no denying this New York duo's slow jams are sexy as shit.

CARIBOU – CAN'T DO WITHOUT YOU (EXTENDED MIX)

An extended mix of Caribou's trillest song to date?! Well if you say so :).

MT. SI. – TRUE

Mt. Si. are a trio from LA, they have 2 songs to their name (this and “Oh”) and RAC subscribes to them on SoundCloud. That's all I can really tell you atm. That, and their music is gorgeosity made flesh. Their female vocalist occasionally resembles Grimes, had Grimes stuck to dreampop and not fucking dubstep (I'm STILL not over “Go”). Here's hoping they fix their corrupt harddrive soon...

TENRU – THE WAY SHE MOVES

DAMN SON, this is one way to introduce yourself to the blogosphere. Tenru has got me all hot under the collar with his debut single (the Australian producer previously uploaded a Kevin Parker approved remix of Tame Impala), the deep 'n' vibey “The Way She Moves.” Imagine Bonobo or Boards of Canada, only if they had exciting sex lives. Unf.

CHET FAKER – SONG FOR MARCIN

YAGYA – CHOOSE (ALTERNATIVE MIX)

Welcome fucking back, Yagya. Here's an alternative mix of “Choose,” as originally featured on the Icelandic producer's 2006 album, Will I Dream During the Process? The differences between the 2 versions is only very subtle, with this sounding a bit brighter, but they're both behemothic oceans of dubbed-out techno that are frankly impossible to not get swept up by. Dat bass though...

SPAGHETTI SAUSE & F ∆ U X E – A LONE

This is tagged as “beautiful noise” on SoundCloud. Beautiful fucking noise indeed. Singapore's F ∆ U X E is 100% one of my favorite producers atm. Dude has perfected this brand of creepwave, a genre that apparently has no probs hitting it off with underground rappers a la Spaghetti Sause and Hisham Tha MC. No doubt, this kind of shit is going to be ALL OVER mainstream hip-hop soon.

KIESZA – SO DEEP

HOLY SHIT YES, this is my jam. I'm a sucker for deep house with beautiful female voices layered over the top. This is that chick I remember reading about who was once a sniper in the Canadian army. I thought she was a poptart, but it turns out she's bumping some LaÌŠpsley type shit. Moral of the story?! Never judge a sniper by its cover.

MVKXXX – NIRVANA

And suddenly, everything is going in slow motion. Give me those downtempo hi-hats, Mvkxxx. I said GIVE ME THEM. Tripping on the late-night metropolitan vibes of this song from the enigmatic London producer. Btw, about that vocal sample. It's taken from Zainab Darong's cover of “Nirvana” by Sam Smith. Zainab Darong > Sam Smith. Everyone to exist ever > Sam Smith.

LÅPSLEY – PAINTER (VALENTINE)

Here's the video for “Painter (Valentine)” by 17-YEAR-OLD artist, LaÌŠpsley, as directed by 17-YEAR-OLD auteur, Harvey Pearson. Brb, going to achieve something with my life...

About Jess Grant

When Jess Grant isn't writing on music, she can be found playing it – on her guitar, on her ukulele, and on her recently acquired mandolin. Playing it hideously, she ought to add. Jess also studies. She studies the English language, to be precise. Jess is currently on her way to a degree in the subject, and enjoys starting and never finishing novels, screenplays, and poetry in her spare time. She also likes dogs. Lots of dogs.
